silchar_mapSilchar is a beautiful place surrounded by the Barail Hills on the north, and Mizo Hills on the south, Manipur to the east and shares a boundary with Bangladesh towards the west. It has a population of 144,003(2001 census). But, presently, it is considered that the population has actually crossed the 500,000 mark due to the constant increase in the city's population over the past 5 to 6 years.

It is the economic gateway of Mizoram and part of Manipur. Late Prime minister Indira Gandhi rightly named it the ‘Island of Peace’ for being the most peaceful place in Assam.

Silchar is one of the must-visit places in the state. It has a large number of tourist spots to attract its shiva mandirvisitors. One of the most attractive tourist spot in Silchar is the Shiva Mandir, which is situated some 35 km from the township of Silchar. Some other famous tourist spots are Maniharan Tunnel, Martyrs’ Tomb, Kanchakanti Kali Mandir, Palace of Kachari Kings, etc.

Silchar always witnesses a moderate climate with wind generally blowing from the northeast in the morning and from the southeast in the afternoon. Summer seasons (April-May) has a maximum of 40°C and winter (October to March) has a minimum 5°C.

Educational Scenario of Silchar

With one of the 20 National Institutes of Technology, NIT Silchar is one of the oldest engineering colleges in the North-Eastern region. Other than that it has its own University, named as the Assam University, with 51 affiliated colleges under it. Some of them are Guru Charan College, Cachar College, Ramanuj College, Hemangini Dey Memorial Jr. College, Aryan Jr. College, Radhamadhab College,Surendra Memorial Jr.College etc. It also has a medical college named Assam Medical College, which offers courses at the both graduate and post-graduate level.

Among the schools the best known ones are Adhar Chand H.S. School, Holy Cross School, Silchar Collegiate School, Narsing School, Govt. Boys School, Govt. Girls school, Muktashree High School, Holy Child School, South Point School, Oriental High School, Maharishi Vidya Mandir, a couple of Kendriya Vidyalayas, Don Bosco School, Ramanuj Vidya Mandir, etc.
